Car
insurance is one of the most commonly purchased forms of insurance,
with over 20 million cars on the road in the UK. There are
many different factors which affect the final price when an
insurance company assesses to potential risk involved. Consequently,
no two motor insurance clients are likely to be rated the same way. For example even
two people driving similar vehicles and living in the same road may
be asked to pay different premiums simply because they are not the
same age.

Can you afford not to stay
insured?

If you are thinking of using an
online price comparison website, STOP! and consider
this...
On Friday 5th December 2008, the
BBC's long established and respected "Money Programme",
broadcast an expose into the practices of certain insurance
providers and insurance price comparison web sites. They
found that very often the insurance products sold were "stripped
down" in order to appear cheaper. Tactics include
increasing policy excesses, removing courtesy vehicles and
reducing windscreen cover among others. Something which
may not be noticed by the consumer until an incident occurs and
then unfortunately it's too late.

Comprehensive
Car Insurance
As well as the perils covered by
Third Party Fire and Theft, a Comprehensive Car
Insurance policy
provides that in the event of damage to the vehicle the insurer will
have it repaired. Most Comprehensive policies also include other
additional benefits, subject to certain limitations which vary from
insurer to insurer. These can include :-
- Personal Accident benefits,
payable on death or injury whilst in the vehicle.
- Windscreen cover, payable on
breakage or cracking of glass including resultant scratching ,
without loss of no claims bonus.
- Rugs clothing or other personal
effects, payable in the event of loss following an accident,
theft or attempted theft of the vehicle.
- Audio equipment cover, payable
in the event of loss following an accident, theft or attempted
theft of the vehicle
- Medical expenses, payable in
connection with any injuries sustained whilst in the vehicle.
- Free Replacement Car, applying
after the notification of a claim in which the insured vehicle
is not driveable or whilst repairs are being carried out.
- Free Green card, for vehicles
temporarily being driven abroad.
- New car replacement, for
vehicles less than 1 years old severely damaged by an insured
peril.
This type of policy does offer the
widest form of cover available, but does not cover every conceivable
risk. For example loss due to wear and tear or depreciation are of
course excluded.
Third Party Fire and Theft
Car Insurance
As the title suggests, in addition to
the perils covered by the
Third Party Only
policy, cover for the vehicle following loss or damage caused by a
fire, theft or attempted theft is included. If following a fire or
theft, the costs of restoring the vehicle to its pre claim condition
is greater that the pre claim value, the insurer has the right to
declare the vehicle an economic total loss (commonly known as
'writing off') and in this event would pay to the owner the market
value of the car prior to the loss.
In respect of fire claims it should
be noted that insurance policies exclude mechanical or electrical
failures and breakages. For example, if the poor condition of the
electrical system caused a fire, the insurer would be entitled to
exclude from the claim any cost of replacing the electrical system
although the other damage caused by the fire would be covered.
Third Party Only
Car Insurance
Although less
common these days,
third party only is the minimum level
of cover that can normally be purchased for car insurance in the
UK. It provides cover for the driver of an insured vehicle
against liability for death or bodily injury to other persons
(including passengers), and damage to other peoples property. The
Road Traffic Act ensures that the policy covers costs incurred in
providing emergency treatment to the driver and all passengers if
injured in an accident. Costs of legal representation at a coroners
court or in a court of Summary Jurisdiction are also provided for
should the accident have resulted in a fatality. The cover also
extends to acts of negligence by passengers whilst in the vehicle,
for example if a door was to be opened into the path of an oncoming
vehicle, the damage caused to the other vehicle would be covered.
Uninsured Loss Recovery Insurance is
available at an additional cost for all covers. |
